Old gold

Read in Coin World about a new collecting ambition: coins from the first Philly mint. Don’t know how to spell the city. One goal would be to have one of each coin in copper, silver and gold. Another would be to get the whole type set. Well, I already have the copper and silver so I just need one old gold coin dated 1833 or earlier.

A desk full of coins

I have no workspace left, it is full of coins. I’m planning my overseas trip and lately find that I have no time for anything. Preparing for any trip lasting more than 10 days is serious work and is not kind to the wallet either.

Hopefully, I will find someplace to fill out the post office’s Authorization to Hold Mail.

Recently, I became interested in trying to understand what it takes for a Washington Quarter to reach MS-65. I spent $20 for a MS-65 NGC 1954-S Quarter just for that. I could have bought another MS-65 PCGS one I wanted more and also looked cleaner. Now looking at the coin I got, it seems to me the minimum requirements for this grade is not easy. It almost nearly a perfect coin and someone without any skills in grading would probably rate it MS-67 or 68. I am guessing one could find only a few MS-65s from an original roll. Next time, I will not assume a Washington Quarter is MS-65 unless it looks at least MS-67!

8/25-8/26: The Golden State Coin Show in Arcadia, CA

8/25 was my birthday and me and my wife were greeted by the friendly lady at the admission table. The turnout for this coin show seemed lower than expected. Some dealers left a little early, including Charmy, The Penny Lady. I heard one of the dealers had passed away, and so flowers were left at his table.
